Almaz's Story
Hi, My name is Almaz!
My family and I are extremely poor. I live with my parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister. My daily chore is to fetch water from the river for our household.
I became part of the Boys’ and Girls’ Towns of Ethiopia to be able to continue to go to school. I am in the 10th grade and my favorite subjects are Civics and Ethical Education. One day I dream of going to law school and becoming a lawyer.
I love books and read every chance I get!
A Chance In Life
Founded: 1945
U.S. Federal EIN: 13-1835632
Since 1945, A Chance In Life has impacted the lives of over 32,000 at-risk youth. The work that began on the streets of post-World War II Rome has expanded in the last four years to Ethiopia, India, and most recently, to Latin America. A Chance In Life’s mission has been to help at-risk, disadvantaged, and disabled youth to become self-confident, creative, and responsible members of their own communities through an innovative approach called “Self-Government”. The self-government approach gives youth the opportunity to actively participate in the day to day running of their community and to have a voice in creating their own future.
Our programs provide boys and girls an opportunity to go to school and focus on their future. We prioritize family support and a healthy home environment, children are given a home, as well as access to workshops, homework assistance and sports. Our Organization is committed to allow boys and girls a chance to develop their emotional and social skills by focusing on their education and strengthening their academic performances, but most of all by allowing them to be joyful kids again.
A Chance In Life currently serves 2,500 children worldwide.
